Indoor Doggy Fun

by

Theoretically, we are headed to the cold, rainy/snowy time of year and you might not be able to (or have the desire to) get out there and take your pup on a great sniffari (see previous blog). So what are some indoor ideas?

Make a Tricks List

We all know Furry Fundamentals loves trick training (consider joining us in the Spring for a Trick class!). When the weather isn’t conducive to outside play, it’s time to think outside of the box. Try and think of all the cool things you would love to teach your pet. Make a list of those tricks and behaviors and then start breaking them down into achievable steps.  Be thinking of how do you get from a novice to a finished behavior (see a previous blog on that).

Checkout KikoPup

One of our favorite sites is Dog Training by KikoPup. The channel is full of awesome trick tutorials that you can do at home. From novice to advanced, this site has something for every pooch!

Hide the Kong

Playing “hide it” is a great mental game for dogs, as well as tasty! Fill their Kongs or any other stuffable toys with Peanut Butter (or plain yogurt, pumpkin, or canned food) and put it in really hard to reach places.  Don’t just hand them the Kong, make them work for it (remember, mental exercise is just as important as physical exercise). Watch the wheels turn as your pooch tries to figure out how to get their toy that’s filled with yummy goodness. You could even time your dog and see how much quicker they reach their toy each time you play. Try putting it in different places each time to make it even more stimulating.

Doggy Brain Games

Try any of the brain games and mental enrichment that we include in our newsletters (be sure to subscribe!).  “Find it” is a great and easy way to feed your pup while engaging their mind. Other doggy brain games we love? Putting treats in a box and then making it very difficult for them to get into the box. Watch as your pooch sizes up the box to figure out how to get to the treat.

Shake Your Tail

Did you know you can create a music playlist both you and your pup will love?  Back in January, Spotify launched its first pet playlist! Turn on the music, and dance with your pup, romp around the house or just snuggle and enjoy spending time together. Your furry friend will appreciate the time you spend with them.

Get Creative!

You can get creative!  Remember that mental enrichment is more important than physical exercise so that cold rainy weather can inspire you to get the (tennis) ball rolling on some great activities!

We’d love to hear from you! What are your favorite indoor games to play?
